Ain't I A Woman: What Does Proverbs 31 Say About Womanhood?

Ain't I A Woman: What Does Proverbs 31 Say About Womanhood?

There are so many conflicting messages about a woman's "role". We hear from society, we hear from our families, and friends but it's essential to turn to God's Word for guidance and clarity.

The Proverbs 31 woman is often held up as the epitome of biblical womanhood, but what does her example truly teach us?

Proverbs 31 paints a vivid picture of a woman who is industrious, wise, and devoted to her family. She is a wife, a mother, and a businesswoman, managing her household with skill and diligence. Her worth is far above rubies, not solely because of her external accomplishments, but because of her fear of the Lord and her commitment to following His commandments.

As a stay-at-home mom with a PhD, I've experienced reactions from both the extremes. On one hand I get praise "You are doing God's work by staying home." to the absolute side-eye of "Girl, you went to school that long just to stay at home?".

That being said, I've encountered firsthand the misconceptions surrounding the Proverbs 31 woman. While her example is often cited to suggest that a woman's sole domain is within the home, a deeper examination reveals her multifaceted nature. She was not only a diligent homemaker but also a savvy businesswoman, managing various enterprises outside her household. Unfortunately, some have used her story to confine women to "traditional roles", overlooking the richness and diversity of the talents and skills of this magnificent example. Sadly, I can see how twisting the verses in this way breeds unnecessary division and guilt among women. However, I've come to realize that God's plan for my life transcends societal or even cultural expectations. He calls each of us to love Him, follow Him, and keep His commandments, regardless of our specific circumstances.

It's crucial to recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to womanhood. While the Proverbs 31 woman serves as an inspiring example, we must remember that her virtues are not confined to traditional domestic roles. Women who work outside the home are just as capable of embodying godly characteristics and fulfilling their calling in Christ and a wife who stays at home...may have her heart far from Christ. Just as the Proverbs 31 woman exemplifies faithfulness and devotion to her family, every woman—regardless of her circumstances—has the opportunity to honor God through her actions.

Ultimately, our worth as women is not determined by our occupation or marital status, but by our relationship with God. Whether single or married, working or staying at home, we are called to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Side Note: Should out to all the single ladies. There is a blessing in singleness. I found it to be a great season to embrace wholeheartedly, as it allowed for my undivided devotion to the Lord and more time to serve (1 Corinthians 7:34).

In a culture that often confuses success with worldly achievements or praise from others, let us reclaim God's definition of womanhood. Let us prioritize faithfulness, integrity, and obedience to His Word above all else. Whether our path leads us to the boardroom or the kitchen table, may we strive to honor God in every aspect of our lives.
